Community gives wind farm concept the thumbs up
A six month study has found there is more than enough support in the New England Region to establish a community wind farm.
The New England Wind Initiative will recommend 8 turbines be built
It says that number has the potential to generate enough electricity for almost half of the New England Tablelands residential use.
Coordinator Adam Blakester says more than 13 hundred community members and stakeholders were consulted for the study.
He says the final report will be publicly released next month, after it is sent to the state government.
“From there we will start looking at funding work on creating the wind farm, the next stage of work will be assessing potential sites.
“We have nearly 120 local landholders who’ve expressed interested in hosting turbines, these are the first steps in a 3-5 year journey.”
“That’s quite a substantial first step and will require us to raise about $30 million.
“It sounds like a lot, and it is a lot of money, but that’s about double the amount that people have invested in this part of the country in the last few years on small scale wind and small scale solar power,” he said.
