Fed attacks on renewable energy underscores need for state leadership

Just a day after the new chief scientist Dr Alan Finkel called for Australia to accelerate the switch from polluting coal to clean renewable energy, it was revealed the Federal government has mounted another attack on renewables.

It has allowed the terms of Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) board members to expire, leaving the body tasked with driving cleantech innovation to be run by a bureaucrat.

The federal government’s latest attack comes a little over six months after it cut the national Renewable Energy Target by 20 percent. Uncertainty surrounding the scheme resulted in a 90 percent drop in investment and over 2,500 people losing their jobs.

The Federal government’s anti-renewable energy agenda is exactly why we need leadership from the Andrews government.

Premier Andrews has promised Victorian Renewable Energy Targets for 2020 and 2025. If they’re ambitious, Victoria can act as a safe-haven for the sector–attracting billions worth of investment and gaining thousands of jobs.
