At the weekend, Fairfax media revealed the Turnbull government had lifted the controversial wind farm investment ban imposed on the Clean Energy Finance Corporation under Prime Minister Tony Abbott.
Friends of the Earth welcomed the decision to lift the wind farm investment ban, and urged the Turnbull government to make it policy to retain the country’s sole clean energy bank:
“The Turnbull government’s decision to allow the Clean Energy Finance Corporation to invest in wind farms is welcome,” said Leigh Ewbank, Friends of the Earth renewable energy spokesperson.
“It signals a return of common sense energy policy and a welcome departure from the ideological approach of the Abbott era.”
“The CEFC is still on the chopping block. It’s still policy of the Federal government to axe the clean energy bank. Friends of the Earth are calling on the Turnbull government to retain the CEFC and give confidence to renewable energy investors.”
Friends of the Earth also questioned the government’s decision to urge a focus on offshore wind farms.
“The government’s decision to urge the CEFC to focus on offshore wind is shortsighted. If you want to create jobs and rollout renewables then it will encourage investment on onshore wind farms,” said Leigh Ewbank.
“There are over 2,300 MW of wind farms already approved in Victoria. These projects are ready to go and need investment now.”
Friends of the Earth says lifting the investment ban on wind farms will help the Andrews government meet ambitious Victorian Renewable Energy Targets for 2020 and 2025.
“The CEFC’s revised investment mandate will help the Andrews government meet Victorian Renewable Energy Targets. Premier Andrews can be more ambitious as wind farms in Victoria will be able to access funds from the clean energy bank,” added Ewbank.
“The community will welcome a commitment from the Andrews government for Victorian Renewable Energy Targets above its initial pledge of at least 20 percent by 2020.”
